Fibonacci: Forgotten Numbering System

Golden Ratio & Golden Section

In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio between the sum of those quantities and the larger one is the same as the ratio between the larger one and the smaller.
Expressed algebraically:
The golden ratio is often denoted by the Greek letter phi (Φ or φ).
The figure of a golden section illustrates the geometric relationship that defines this constant. The golden ratio is an irrational mathematical constant, approximately 1.6180339887.

Golden Rectangle

golden rectangle is a rectangle whose side lengths are in the golden ratio, 1: (one-to-phi),
that is, 1 :  or approximately 1:1.618.
A golden rectangle can be constructed with only straightedge
and compass by this technique:
  1. Construct a simple square
  2. Draw a line from the midpoint of one side of the square to an opposite corner
  3. Use that line as the radius to draw an arc that defines the height of the rectangle
  4. Complete the golden rectangle

Golden Spiral

In geometry, a golden spiral is a logarithmic spiral whose growth factor b is related to j, the golden ratio. Specifically, a golden spiral gets wider (or further from its origin) by a factor of jfor every quarter turn it makes.

Successive points dividing a golden rectangle into squares lie on
a logarithmic spiral which is sometimes known as the golden spiral.

Golden Ratio in Architecture and Art

Many  architects and artists have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. [Source:Wikipedia.org]
Here are few examples:

The Vetruvian Man"(The Man in Action)" by Leonardo Da Vinci
We can draw many lines of the rectangles into this figure.
Then, there are three distinct sets of Golden Rectangles:
Each one set for the head area, the torso, and the legs.
Leonardo's Vetruvian Man is sometimes confused with principles of  "golden rectangle", however that is not the case. The construction of Vetruvian Man is based on drawing a circle with its diameter equal to diagonal of the square, moving it up so it would touch the base of the square and drawing the final circle between the base of the square and the mid-point between square's center and center of the moved circle:

Golden Ratio in Nature

Adolf Zeising, whose main interests were mathematics and philosophy, found the golden ratio expressed in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants and of veins in leaves. He extended his research to the skeletons of animals and the branchings of their veins and nerves, to the proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals, even to the use of proportion in artistic endeavors. In these phenomena he saw the golden ratio operating as a universal law.[38] Zeising wrote in 1854:
The Golden Ratio is a universal law in which is contained the ground-principle of all formative striving for beauty and completeness in the realms of both nature and art, and which permeates, as a paramount spiritual ideal, all structures, forms and proportions, whether cosmic or individual, organic or inorganic, acoustic or optical; which finds its fullest realization, however, in the human form.

The Piri Reis Map

If you try and search the Internet using "Piri Reis Map" as keywords, you will come across many websites dedicated to "mysteries", which allege that this map, dated "Year 919 in Muslim Calender", contains a precise representation of the coasts of Antarctica, a continent unknown at that time. According to Charles Hapgood, author of "Maps of the Ancient Sea King: Evidence of Advanced Civilization in the Ice Age", those maps contain a precise representation of Antarctica as it was before last ice age.

According to many mystery enthusiasts, the map was either based on ancient representations, perhaps dating as far as the mythical Atlantis, or were drawn from pictures taken from sky. That because the knowledge available as of 16th century cannot explain such stunning correspondence with reality.

Both Hapgood and Hancock claim that the representation of the Antarctic continent is incredibly precise. And since it clearly indicates rivers, lakes and mountains, this ancient cartographic model could date as back as 15,000 years ago. They also suggest that the map was drawn basing on surveys, which must have been taken from a satellite in a geostationary orbit over Egypt.

What is known today as the map of Turkish admiral Piri Reis is actually just a fragment of the original, much larger map, which represented the whole known world. This surviving represents Atlantic Ocean, western coasts of Europe and Africa, and eastern coasts of America. It is dated "Muslim Year 919". According to its author, the map was compiled from "twenty older charts and eight planispheres". It is very likely that Reis also examined the journey accounts written by early explorers of Hasan Fehmi and publishes by Yusuf Akcura, President of the Society for Turkish Historical Research, in 1935 in his work "Piri Reis Haritasi", and then re-published by Ayse Afitinan in "The oldest map of America" in 1954. It is worth nothing that, although this and other maps abound with clear and perfectly readable text and captions, the authors who present them as proof of their extravagant these quotes nothing but few lines. Yhe only region of South America to look sufficiently detailed on the map is the coast of Brazil, although the river of Amazon is drwan twice, in different locations.

Piri Reis himself states, in a note, that he consulted the charts of Christopher Columbus. The peculiar configuration of the Caribbean area in his map seem to confirm that statement. That region of the American continent is indeed improperly represented: it features a large island arranged north-south which cannot be identified with Cuba, not even by rotating the whole map counterclockwise by 90 degrees.

But what mystery lovers are most enthusiast about is the bottom edge of the map, which is said to represent Antarctica. Some claim that Land of Queen Maud and other features Antarctica are clearly recognizable on the map, even though that continent was not explored but many centuries later. Unfortunately these people, including Hancock, claim the hypothesis without making any cartographic comparison or first-hand check: they just accept Charles Hapgood's statements as true.

The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica

Intro

One of the strangest mysteries in archaeology was discovered in the Diquis Delta of Costa Rica. Since the 1930s, hundreds of stone balls have been documented, ranging in size from a few centimeters to over two meters in diameter. Some weigh 16 tons. Almost all of them are made of granodiorite, a hard, ingenous stone. These objects are monolithic sculptures made by human hands.

The spheres number over 300. The large ones weigh many tons. Today, they decorate official buildings such as the Asamblea Legislativa, hospitals, and schools. You can find them in museums. The spheres were previously unknown to the inhabitants and they could offer no explanation of who made them or how old they were. Plantation workers bulldozed them and largely ignored them until rumors started spreading that they may contain gold or precious jewels. Many balls were drilled or cracked open with dynamite, only to reveal that they were composed of soil rock.

When news of these rock balls reached the authorities, several whole specimens and parts of the fractured balls were taken to the National Museum in San Jose. Here, they attracted the attention of Doris Stone, daughter of a United Fruit executive, who photographed them and wrote an article about the phenomenon in the 1943 edition of American Antiquity.

Since then, archaeologists have been perplexed by the stones. Thousands have now been found. Some are as small as four inches -- while others are as massive as eight feet in diameter. Estimates of their age goes back some 1,600 years, yet no one can be sure how they were made, by who or why.

Myths

The spherical stones certainly took a long time to make. The age of these stones place them at a time when no iron tools were known to exist in that region, meaning the spheres were somehow formed by stone implements. Yet no stone tools of this era and geographic are have been found.

All of this has lead some researchers to speculate that the stone spheres were made by some advanced civilization.

Some local legends tell of a magic potion that was able to make the rock soften and hence easily manipulated. This same legend persists to explain other phenomenon such as the precisely carved and fitted stones of Machu Pichu. One legend says that the spheres were formed around a coffee bean or nuggets of gold.

Other legends claim that the spheres were part of a game, once played by giants that inhabited the Earth or that the spheres represent stars of constellations in the sky.

Many of the spheres are made of granite like rock. The closest granite quarries of similar rock are in the Talamanca Mountain some 50 miles away. Although the stones could have been transported down the nearby Terraba River, no unfinished stones or evidence of excavation in the mountains has ever been found.

The construction of the spheres would have required a high degree of measurement and mathematics. One perplexing question is why this same level of skill and precision has not been found in any other artifacts of this region or era.

Georgia Guidestones: A modern Stonehenge

On one of the highest hilltops in Elbert County, Georgia stands a huge granite monument. Engraved in eight different languages on the four giant stones that supports the common capstone are 10 Guides, or commandments. That monument is alternatively referred to as The Georgia Guidestones, or the American Stonehenge. Though relatively unknown to most people, it is an important link to the Occult Hierarchy that dominates the world in which we live.

The origin of that strange monument is shrouded in mystery because no one knows the true identity of the man, or men, who commissioned its construction. All that is known for certain is that June 1979, a well-dressed, articulate stranger visited the office of the Elberton Granite Finishing Company and announced that he wanted to build an edifice to transit a message to mankind. He identified himself as R.C Christian, but it soon became apparent that was not his real name. He said that he represented a group of men who wanted to offer direction to humanity, but to date, almost two decades later, no one knows who R.C Christian really was, or the names of those represented. Several things are apparent. The messages engraved on the Georgia Guidestones deal with four major fields:

1. Governance and Establishment of a world government.
2. Population and reproduction control.
3. The environment and man's relationship to nature.
4. Spirituality.

The languages on the stone are:
-  Spanish
- English
- Russian
- Chinese
- Arabic
- Hebrew
- Swahili
- Hindi

The old languages are:
- Egyptian Hieroglyphics
- Sanskrit
- Classical Greek
- Babylonian Cuneiform

Here are the messages written on the monument

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion-faith-tradition-and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth-beauty-love-seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the Earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature.

The parallel stories of wiping out Earth's 'Unwanted' population has always been coming up in various religious stories. Let's say, in Bible, the story of Noah and his Ark. In Hindus, how Vishnu after every 'Yuga' reincarnates or his various 'Avatars' help wipe out the filths of the Earth; his next Avatar's due at the end of 'Kali Yuga' - the present 21st century named 'Kalki', the previous one was 'Krishna'. So, were the maker's of the guidestone knowing the prophecy of the upcoming apocalypse?

The message of the American Stonhenge also foreshadowed the current drive for Sustainable Development. To this day, many account this message with the Nazism ideology of "Space Lebensraum". That's why many times, the social activists and the grave diggers have tried to hinder the monumental space with various graffitis.

Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lenon, was recently quoted as referring to the guidestones, saying:
I want people to know about the stones.... we're headed toward a world where we might blow ourselves up and maybe the globe will not exist....it's a nice time to reaffirm ourselves, knowing all the beautiful things that are in this country and the Georgia Stones symbolize that."

The group that made the guidestones - unknown - is one of the many groups working together toward a New World Order, a new world economic system, and a new world spirituality. Behind those groups, however, are dark spiritual forces. Without understanding the nature of those dark forces it is impossible to understand the unfolding of world events.

Who is R.C Christian?

The official story offers a number of facts about the Chrisitan figure. There are quotations supposedly from the man himself along with the comments from Joe H. Fendley, Sr. and Wyatt C. Martin - the only people who have met R.C Christian, while Martin is the only person who knows for sure his identity. Christian apparently stated, "I only use that name because I am a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ." Apart from his religious belief, Christian is described as having served in the WW II and described himself as patriotic American in every sense of the world. Obviously a man of great wealth, he also "appears to be well traveled and intelligent man" who travelled in Europe and was impressed with various historcial monument like the stonehenge.

In Randall Sullivan's well-circulated article on the Georgia Guidestones for Wired, it is revealed that Christian kept in regular contact with Martin: regular letters and occasional meetings in Athens. The last point of contact was close to the events of 9/11 and Martin assumes, based on age, that Christian might now be deceased. In their meetings, Christian never discussed the books and the well kept cotact with the only person that knows his identity indicates a desire to perform the role of Christian to the only person for whom he could.

Coral Castle: Built single-handedly?

The Builder: Ed Leeskalnin

Very little is known of the mysterious creator of the Coral Castle, Ed Leeskalnin. He was born in Riga, Latvia in 1887, in a stonemasons family, Ed immigrated to the U.S sometime around 1913 after his fiancee broke off their engagement. During a bout with tuberculosis around 1919, he moved to Florida, where 'magnets' were apparentky used to treat his condition. This experience seems to have had a life-changing efect, as you'll see later.

After he bought a parcel of land in Florida, Ed began to work on the castle. A longer, one hundred pound, ive-feet tall Ed refused to let anyone even watch him work, and no one is known to have helped him move, carve or place the massive stones. When asked how he manipulated such large blocks alone, Ed would explain he had "DISCOVERED THE SECRETS OF THE PYRAMIDS."

The Castle

Originally named Rock Gate Park, the Coral Castle was irst erected at Ed's remote Florida City home. Fearing the loss of privacy as development moved closer, Ed transported his castle, with the aid o a truck, tactor and trailer, 10 miles north to its present location in Homestead, Florida.

Not really coral, the huge stones that comprises the castle are composed of oolitic limestone; the coral designation came about later when visitors noticed fossilized coral and shells in some of the rocks.

the average weight of the stones is about 14 tons each. With these huge rockes, Ed built walls, erected a tower and a 22-ton obelisk. He made o variety of 'furniture' including beds and rocking chairs, as well as a fountain, well, sundial and throne.

Apparently fascinated with astronomy, Ed carved a stone telescope, and even erected large stone depictions of Jupiter, Saturn and moon from blocks weihing as much as 23 tons. For the most part, each carving and piece is made from a single stone. The tallest stone reaches 25 feet, while the heaviest rock weighs nearly 30 tons.

Using no joint compound or mortar, the massive stones, when combined together, are held in place by their own weight.

They are so well constructed that during the Category 5 huricane Andrew in 1992, none of these stone shifted and the 8 ft. wall was not effectd and remains to this day o uniform height around the wall.

Perhaps te most spetacular structure on the ground is the eight-foot tall revolving gate. Carved to exating specifications, it clears the walls next to it by a mere quarter of an inch. Before it needed repair in 1986, it was widely reporeted that the swivel was so well designed that the gate could be opened with just the push of one finger.

When it broke in 1986 the nine-ton gate required six men and a crane to remove and re-install what Ed put up alone.

The big question: How did he do it?

Ed believed that the animating force in the universe does not come from the protons and electrons in the atom, but rather from tiny magnets o different an opposite polarity that imbue all matter.

His book, Magnetic Current says,

the magnet can be shifted and concentrated........you can see that the metal is not the real magnet. The real magnet is the substance that is circulating in the metal. Each particle in the substance is an individual magnet by itself, and contains both North and South pole magnets. They are so small they can pass through metal easier than through air. They are in constant motion.........running one kind of magnets against the other kind, and if guided in the right channels they possess perpetual power.

It is the perpetual power that Ed says to have harnessed in order to move, carve and place his humongous stones. The power itself came from a machine he dubbed the Perpetual Motion Holder. He built on his idea that electricity is made up of two magnetic forces that move opposite each other in a double helix motio. Ed's machine was composed of two coiled wires, each having its own terminal and current, and connected to each other nose to tail in a circuit. This completed circuit allowed individual magnets to form into one of two currents, and the currents to chase each other in a never ending loop.

Ed claimed that by directing this perpetual electromagnetic energy, he could easily manipulate the large stones. According to unverified reports, the massive rocks would then be floated into places just like hydroen balloons. Deriding the theories of conventional archaeologists, Ed is quoted as saying he had found out how the Egyptians and the ancients of Peru, Yucatan, and Asia, with only primitive tools, raised and set in place blocks o stone weighing many tons.

Is PMH real?

Several people have claimed to have successfully constructed a PHM. But as you might imagine, hard, documented, well-vetted evidence of a full size machine that can float stones around as he said is hard to come by, which is unfortunate because such technology is unexplainable.

But whatever he did, Ed died with his secret. The only witnesses were some teenagers who say that they saw him driting stones in air like balloons. And once again, an another person from the history immerses and awakens us at the same time to realize the might of knowledge our ancestors possessed.

Iron Pillar or Ashok Stambh of Delhi

Standing at the center of the Quwwatul Mosque is an iron pillar or Indians know it by the name “Ashok Stambh”, in the name of the pillar Ashoka stands for the name of the emperor who built it and Stambh in Sanskrit meaning pillar. The pillar was erected by Ashoka who was 3rd ruler of the Maurya dynasty from 269 BCE to 232 BCE. The pillar has inscriptions of Vishnu and Chandragupta Maurya (Ashoka’s Grandfather) in Sanskrit. Besides its historical importance the pillar is the most mysterious monument that has attracted many archaeologists and metallurgists. The metallurgic technique used to erect this pillar is still unknown.

The height of the pillar is 7.21 m, and it weighs around six tons. The date when the pillar was built and the original locations of the pillar have constantly been in discussion. Some experts say that the pillar was erected in 900 BCE, the same time when the concept of zero originated in India. For the location, a summary of views on this subject and related matters was collected in volume edited by M.C Joshi and published in 1989. More recently, opinions have been summarized again by Upinder Singh in her book Delhi: Ancient History. Metallurgists at Kanpur IIT have discovered that a thin layer of “Misawite”, a compound of iron, oxygen, and hydrogen, has protected the cast iron pillar from rust. The protective film took form within three years after erection of the pillar and has been growing ever so slowly since then. After 1,600 years, the film has grown just one-twentieth of a millimeter thick.

The high phosphorus content is a result of the unique iron-making process practiced by ancient Indians, who reduced iron ore into steel in one step by mixing it with charcoal. Modern blast furnace, on the other hand, use limestone in place of charcoal yielding molten slang and pig iron that is later converted into steel. In the modern process most of the phosphorus is carried away by the slag.
Though the Indian Institute of Technology has resolved with a somewhat clear explanation, the mystery still remains as to how the ancients knew such knowledge, who gathered such knowledge in the ancient India where the preference at that time was more on spirituality, why didn’t they pass this knowledge to the future generations, and how did they achieve such a feat.

5 Mysterious ruins that predate known civilization?

Artifacts and ruins discovered all over the world have made many scientists question whether the currently accepted understanding of prehistoric culture is correct.

Here's a look at some disputed sites, thought by some to hold evidence of prehistoric civilizations far more advanced than scientists thought possible. Some of these structures have been submerged as sea levels have risen over the course of thousands of years.

1. Bosnian Pyramid oldest in world: 25,000 years old:

Two Italian archaeologists, Dr. Ricarrdo Brett and Niccolo Bisconti, found a piece of organic material on the pyramid last year. They were able to carbondate the material, and with it, the pyramid itself. This carbon dating places the pyramid 20,000 years before the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations, believed to be some of the earliest in the world.

When the Bosnian Pyramid was first discovered in 2005, researchers could only measure the age of the topsoil covering the pyramid, which is about 12,000 years old.

Dr. Semir Osmanagich, a researcher woorking on the Bosnian Pyramid told NTD Television last year: "The organic materials found on the Sun Pyramid and biological analysis are telling us that the pyramids are older than 12,500 years - the oldest on the planet."

Since the pyramid was covered with soil and vegetation, people thought it was just a hill until the stone structure within was discovered. It was known as Visoko hill.

While many local scientists back Osmanagich, there are skeptics. Boston University geologists Robert Scoch, who spent 10 days on site, told Smithsonian magazine in 2009 that the pyramid is a natural formation. Paul Heinrich, an archaeological geologists at Louisiana State University agreed. Heinrich told Smithsonian: "The landforn [Osmanagich] is calling a pyramid is actually quite common.......They're called 'flatirons' in the United States and you see a lot of them out West."

Enver Buza, a surveyor from Sarajevo's Geodetic Institute has stated in paper that the pyramid is "oriented to the north with perfect precision," reported Smithsonian. Some say the case of Bosnia's pyramids has been for political gains.

2. Gobekli Tepe, Turkey: 11,000 years old

Gobekli Tepe in Turkey is made up of massive stone megaliths that predate Stonehenge by about 6,000 years. It's believed by archaeologist Klaus Schmidt that this is the oldest human place of worship - at least 11,000 years old - built at a time when scientists say people hadn't even developed agriculture.

Stanford University archaeologist Ian Hodder told Smithsonian magazine the prehistoric structures in Gobekli Tepe could change how science views prehistoric culture.

"The dating is clear, there is n question about it," Schmidt said in a Red Ice Creations radio interview. With a combination of carbon dating and using the age of surrounding structures, Schmidt is confident Gobekli Tepe is at least 11,000 years old.

"The astonishing fact is that we did not expect for a hunter gatherer society to be able to manage such an operation, to transport a megalith," he said.

With ground-penetrating radar scans, Schmidt and his team have determined that at least 16 other rings of megaliths are still underground across 22 acres, according to the 2008 Smithsonian article. Even in 50 years, he said, much digging will be left.

Engraved on the megaliths are images of vultures, waterfowl, spiders, and many other creatures.

3. Yonaguni Monument, Japan's Atlantis: 8,000 years old

Believed by some to be built more than 8,000 years ago, before the last Ice Age, a large structure off the coast of Japan's Yonaguni island has been cited as evidence an advanced culture thrived thousands of years earlier than current text books say.

British journalist Graham Hancock and Professor Masaaki Kimura of the Ryukyus in Okinawa studied the structure after it was discovered by a diver in 1987.

Kimura agrees with Hancock that humans either formed the structure or modified a natural formation.

"It looks like a monument," Hancock told the BBC. "It has very curious features. It has a series of steps and terraces cut into its side. It's oriented to the  cardinal directions. It faces due south, it has a deep east-west feature running along in front of it. It bears all the  hallmark of a designed, ceremonial, ritual or religious monument."

Schoch, the same skeptic in the Bosnian pyramid case, disagrees. He told the BBC that "portions of it look like they're man-made," but the way the rock splits naturally could make the formation.

"I think it should be considered a primarily natural structure until more evidence is found to the contrary. However, by no means do I feel that this is an absolutely closed case," he wrote in a 1999 paper.

4. Gulf of Khambhat, Israel: 9,500 years old

At the bottom of Israel's lake Kinneret, also known as the Sea of Galilee, is a massive, enigmatic structure that could be more than 9,500 years old.

It was discovered by the National Institute of Ocean Technology in 2000 in the Gulf of Khambhat. The circular structure made of boulders and rocks spans about 9 kilometers (5 miles). It has only been explored via sonar scanning and dredging. At least one artifact brought up by dredging has been dated to 7,500 BC, according to Princeton University.

The Princeton website explains why some archaeologists refuse to accept the date in relation to the structure itself: "One major complaint is that artifacts at the site were recovered by dredging, instead of being recovered during a controlled archaeological excavation. This leads archaeologist to claim that these artifacts cannot be definitively tied to the site."

Dani Nadel, an archaeologist at the University of Hafia who is working with a team to study the discovery, told Fox News in May: "It's very enigmatic, it's very interesting, but the bottom line is we don't know when it's from, we don't its function," he said. "We only know it is there, it is huge, and it is unusual."

5. Bimini Road: 12,000 years old

Two camps of scientists have faced off on the issue of the underwater structure known as Bimini Road off thee coast of the Bahamas since it was first discovered in 1968.

One camp says it is a 12,000-19,000 years old man made structure - flouting the conventional understanding that advanced civilizations only emerged some 5,000 years ago.

The other camp says it is a natural formation.

Explorer Dr. Greg Little has performed multiple documented dives at the site with archaeologist William Donato.

Donato explained in an email to the Epoch Times that the line of stones form a wall, known as a breakwater, built to protect a prehistoric settlement from waves. During their dives and Little found the structure to be multi-tiered and to include prop stones they say must have been placed there by humans.

Little wrote in a 2005 paper that a neutron activation analysis compared nearby shore stones to the Bimini Wall stones and showed the Bimini stones had fewer trace elements, suggesting they were formed elsewhere and transported to that location.

Introduction to Nazca Lines

Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. Etched in the surface of the desert Pampa sand about 300 hundred figures made of straight lines, geometric shapes and pictures of animals and birds - and their patterns are only clearly visible from the air. Don't believe???? See it for yourself. I am granted with some of the usage rights from National Geographic photographer who was ready to share his work with me - Lucky!

About 1500-2000 years ago the Nazca people inhabited this area. They might not be quite so well known today if it weren’t for the particular geological and climatic features of their homeland. Most people learn about the Nazca because of the famous Nazca lines etched in the desert between the Ingenio and Nazca river valleys. The desert formed an enormous drawing board for the Nazca upon which they etched huge lines, trapazoids, and animal figures by removing the dark colored surface stones and top soil to expose the lighter colored sand underneath. Spread out across several hundred sq kilometers (about 3-4x the size of Manhattan island) of the arid Peruvian desert, these drawings have been remarkably preserved. In any other climate, these drawings would have been obliterated in months, but the Nazca is one of the driest and most windless regions on earth.

Since their discovery in the 1920s, the lines have been variously interpreted, but their significance remains largely shrouded in mystery. The American historian Paul Kosok observed the lines from an airplane in 1941 and hypothesized that they were drawn for astronomical purposes. María Reiche, a German translator who spent years studying the site and lobbying for its preservation, also concluded that it was a huge astronomical calendar and that some of its animal sketches were modeled after groupings of stars in the night sky. In 1967, however, the American astrophysicist Gerald Hawkins found no correlation between changes in the celestial bodies and the design of the Nazca Lines.

Facts about the Nazca Line
  • They cover an area of some 50 miles, and were supposedly created between 200 BC and 700 AD by the Nazca Indians.
  • The area of the Peruvian desert in which the Nazca Lines were drawn is called the Pampa Colorada. It is 15 miles wide and runs some 37 miles parallel to the Andes and the Pacific Ocean.
  • They designed them by scraping away the copper colored rocks of the desert floor to expose the lighter-colored earth beneath.
  • The lines have managed to remain intact for hundreds of years thanks to the region’s arid climate, which sees it receive little rain or wind throughout the year.
  • Some of the lines span distances of 600 feet, and they depict everything from simple designs and shapes to characterizations of plants, insects, and animals.
  • Scientists know who made the Nazca Lines and how they did it, but they still don’t know why?
  • The most popular and reasonable hypothesis is that the lines must have fugured in the Nazca people's religious beliefs, and that they made the designs as offerings to the gods, who would've been able to see them from the heavens.
  • Other scientists argue that the lines are evidence of massive looms that the Nazcas used to make textiles.
Myth and Mysteries of Nazca Lines
1. First of all, these things are large in size and it's enormity is such that The Nazca Lines were meant to be         made for an  aerial view only. The Nazcas passed on the story or folklore that these labyrinths were               created for gods to see - the "Gods" who descended form the sky; the gods who taught them socializing,       farming, building structures, and taught them the language of passing on the information.

2. So let's see what various archaeologists, geographers, archaeometrists, and other cult based pseudo             enthusiasts have to say about our lines.

3. Prof. Clive Ruggles of Leicester University said: "Unlike some of the famous zoomorphic (animal) figures,       its irregular form provides no reason to speculate that it might have been intended to be viewed from the       air".

4. Since their discovery in the 1920s, the lines have been variously interpreted, but their significance remains       largely shrouded in mystery. The American historian Paul Kosok observed the lines from an airplane in        1941 and hypothesized that they were drawn for astronomical purposes.

5. The Nazca Lines are featured in the book "Chariots of the Gods" by Erich Von Daniken that discusses his     belief that the Nazca Lines were created by aliens and used as landing strips.
He felt that the designs were to complex and covered such a large distance that they could not have been created by humans due to the size of the lines, lack of tools plus they had no ability to view the lines from the air.

6. There are people who believe they are remains of ancient airfields, used by a technologically advanced           civilization. The biomorph of a human figure, which some believe is actually a drawing of an ancient               astronaut is often sited as evidence for this theory.

Also, there are researchers like Johan Reinhard who has his own theory to explain the mystery behind the construction of the giant lines.

7. Johan Reinhard detailed various ancient traditions, according to which the mountain-gods took to the skies     in the form of eagles or condors.

Here's a small video for you lovers, the video is small and provides the introduction to the Nazcas:

How were the Lines created?
Scientists believe that:

  1. The rocks which cover the desert have oxidized and weathered to a deep rust color, and when the top 12-15 inches of rock is removed, a light colored, high contrasting sand is exposed.
  2. Because there's so little rain, wind and erosion, the exposed designs have stayed largely intact for 500 to 2000 years.
However, according to Dr. Persis Clarkson, an archaeologist and geoglyph expert at the University of Winnipeg, "It was not a difficult technology, all you need is the will". To prove this, a group of 10 Earthwatch volunteers helped an astronomer and anthropologist, Anthony Aveni, in a study of the Nazca Lines. In just hour and a half, without a printed plan, they created a straight line winding into a spiral 35 meters long and one meter wide. It is fairly conclusive that it was not necessary for the Nazca to have possessed great mathematical or engineeirng skills to create the figures in the desert.

Its been proposed that a rock been put at a certain place in Pampa will remain intact upon your next visit without moving an inch.

The lines according to the latest research were said to be the walkways for Nasca people, the lines were meant to be followed during certain rituals. Also, some theory suggests that they were runway for Nazca people

"No single evaluation proves a theory about the lines, but the combination of archeology, ethnohistory, and anthropology builds a solid case", says Reinhard. Add new technological research to the mix, and there's no doubt that the world's understanding of the Nazca Lines will continue to evolve.

About Ancient Engineering

History has always baffled us with it's various achievements, facts, and myths. Archaeologists and various enthusiasts are putting their best efforts to decipher various mysteries of the past. But, the more we try to get closer to solving a case, the more doubtful we become about the knowledge we feel they possessed; the knowledge which got eradicated through human's greed for land, gold, and other material things which were just dusts before the actual knowledge.

I am much amazed by the historical monuments, whether it be Taj Mahal in India, pyramids of Giza, Machu Pichhu in Peru, or still used Roman roads. The one thing amazing about this structures is that they faced gruesome history aside man: the wars, the natural calamities, and faced plight from scavengers, but they are still standing. At our age we are much amazed(we should be) because a single natural or man made calamities destroys towns and our so called "Disaster Managed" buildings in seconds, against those antiques which were made when there was a little or no technical help.

Therefore my purpose through this blog is to provide:
1. Facts on the places, thing, or monuments we are discussing about.
2. The purpose behind why, when, and how it was built.
3. The myth and mystery lurking in the minds of today's various pseudo enthusiasts.
4. Videos on how scientists technically answer our questions regarding how these monuments were erected        without any machinery.
